Our Outdoor Log Growing Kits contain everything you need to grow mushrooms on logs, totems, or stumps! Each starter kit contains a drill bit, sealing wax, a wax applicator, a 100ct bag of plug spawn, and complete instruction guide. If you're gifting the kit or aren't ready to begin your project, you can select a “voucher” instead of plug spawn, which can be redeemed on site at a later date.

Difficulty: Expert
Chicken of the Woods is a very difficult mushroom species to cultivate. It can be great for experimenting or having some fun trying new methods. Chicken of the Woods does best in oak logs. After a colonization period in above ground, Chicken of the Woods logs should be partially buried under 2 inches of top soil. The mushrooms will fruit from logs and emerge out of the soil.
It should be noted that Chicken of the Woods is prone to being out competed by other fungi and is not a reliable producer without first treating your logs. To limit variables we strongly suggest you sterilize 8" by 8" segments of oak log in a pressure cooker or steam sterilizer before inoculation and incubate your log segments for a few months in sealed filter patch bags until they are completely colonized. Remove them from the bag and partially burying them in a shady location.
Note: Spawn is living and perishable.
Outdoor Log Growing Kits can be shipped either with mushroom spawn included (for projects that will begin within 3 months of the order date) or shipped with a voucher for receiving spawn at a later date (best for gifting or for projects beyond a 3 month start date). Plug spawn can live unrefrigerated for up to three months, though it is best to keep it refrigerated for long-term storage.
